91 B2600I 2wd Upper Control Arm Removal

After 457K miles thought the front end could stand rebuilding. Progressed along good until I came to the upper control arm on driver's side. Disconnected===but to get the control arm out it looks like I will have to remove the steering shaft from the steering gearbox. A little reluctant to do that. I have looked in every manual I can find, researched every forum, etc., and have found zero removal instructions for the control arm. The control arm is disconnected but cannot get it over the shock bracket or through the fender opening without the steering shaft interfering. I can find plenty of info on replacing the bushings but I am replacing the whole control arm.

Question: Has anyone replaced the driver's side upper control arm or confirm if the steering shaft has to be disconnected to replace it? Also, instructions to correctly disconnect/reconnect the steering shaft would be most helpful.

Thanks
