Alternator on Mazda-6D falls off!!!

MY daughter has just had her Mazda 6D break down in Sydney and towed to a Mazda acredited service station on the north shore by the NRMA.
She was told by the manager that the Alternator FELL OFF!! and that she has had to pay $3,980 for a replacement!!!!!
Now I am a former professional engineer in mechanical engineering now retired and I just cannot believe this figure. He also said that the battery had to be replaced. This was a new battery only 6 weeks ago!!!
What is the standard price for an alternator??? and how can it fall off????
I shall be investigating the situation myself next week but I would appreciate advice by all of you here.
