Hi. recently i bought a mazda familia. its a 1993 1.8l dohc turbo 4wd for those who may not know. the car has been driving fine i noticed the other day a louder than normal sound when letting off the accelerator after boosting. i have a pod filter and it normally gives me a flutter sound so its not that. tonight i noticed it again and now after i boosted hard the car stutters on idle and has died a couple times. also the sucking sound under boost is way louder than normal, the car is lacking alot of power under boost and i pulled up at the lights and could smell something bad, sort of like carbon minoxide. when i got home i noticed it was even making the sound on idle (while stuttering). could this be the turbo going? or perhaps a vacuum or boost leak? it sounds like its coming from the turbo itself or somewhere close to it.

Hi,

I live in NZ and we have bought a Mazda Familia 1998 that we got 2nd hand from a trusted source who reported that he had had no problems with the car. We spoke to a number of mechanics about the car and they all said that it was reliable. So we bought and its caused us nothing but problems. Sad times!

Our main problem was a transmission problem that we had to take into a local transmission specialist to sort out. Once the computer had been replaced it drives better but now we have another problem. The fuel economy is terrible now. According to the mechanics we've spoken to, the car should be doing around the 550-600km to a tank mark. We've never had that. At its best it has given us 400km. Now we are lucky if we get 300km to a tank. This has been going on for a while now and we've had the car to the mechanics a few times. They've changed the spark plugs, the engine coolant temperature sensor and the radiator.

Does anyone have any ideas was to what may cause the car to run so inefficiently?

Thanks
