The problem with newsletters in my experience is that it requires a lot of consistent effort to keep them going month after month. In 99% of cases the motivation dies out.

Was a good suggestion though.

I think newsletters are pretty pointless and always seem like SPAM. The goal of this site has ALWAYS been never to spam a member and you haven't seen an ad (although that will *eventually* change), a popup, or any unnecessary emails yet, and I'm not going to start with a newsletter that takes more effort to write than anybody would read.

I don't know about "pointless" - I subscribe to a few newsletters in my e-mail, which give me useful updates on sites I may not frequent as much (possibly including this one, I guess).

But - and this is a key "but" - I did subscribe to those newsletters of my own free will. I wouldn't want to have it thrown at me without my knowledge just for signing up with the forums. (That would definitely be spam.)

I'd have no problem with a voluntary newsletter - but it's got to have meaningful content. Better yet, it should be more of a conduit to information on this site than just a repeater of what's already here. For instance, the newsletter could announce updates to various features or areas - and then prompt the reader to check it out for themselves by clicking a link.
